Can We Give This Guy a Hand?

Some of you may be familiar with the work of Garrett Blair. I've honestly never met Garrett or even so much as emailed him. However, I can tell you that he knows a lot more about drawing girls and using markers than I ever will, and without him, there might not be an andysdames.com at all.

Let's back up a second to three years ago, when I suddenly found myself out of business. The automotive shop I owned collapsed as the global recession rolled over the small Idaho town where I live. I was lucky enough to land a day job working for some very kind people, but with IRS bills and other financial fallout from the shop's closure, as well as a very ill girlfriend at home that depended on me for support, there was no way my paycheck could make ends meet and allow me to stay in my home. Out of desperation, I tried to make some extra bread by drawing pinups, but the early efforts were pretty rough. Desperate for any knowledge that would help me improve my scribbles, I stumbled into Garrett's work and spent hours studying his marker techniques and his methods for selling his pinups. Then, it was you fine people who stepped in, bought my work, and allowed me to scrape by until times got better, which they did- tremendously. Thanks to you guys, the bills are paid and I'm happier and more successful now than I've ever been in my life.

But for Garrett, it seems times have gotten much worse, and he needs help far more than I ever did- I admit that I feel a bit guilty for even thinking I ever had any problems at all, in comparison. One of my goals for this year is to develop the Dames into more complete characters. Although I know she occasionally wears a schoolgirl costume (she bought hers at the same place Kelsie did, apparently) I've always thought of Tina as more of an office professional kinda gal. Sure, I think I was thinking "college student" in her earliest sketches, but hey, that's been a few years ago now- surely she's graduated and gone to work at some point. I know Mona has the secretary gig covered, but I've often thought of Tina as being more like a corporate accountant, or maybe a stockbroker, perhaps? Either way, I'm thinking her day at work here hasn't been going just as she planned (or has it?).

This shot is, really, a prototype of sorts. One of my goals for 2012 is to introduce a few of the Dames in full color. I've already had a couple of color pieces made available as a product of commissions that I've finished, but this is the first all-original "Daily Dame" piece produced in color and unveiled here on the site. It also has several little "tricks" that I thought turned out well. What do you think, shall we start having these regularly?

Well, I might have made a slight error in judgment in this shot of our favorite submissive secretary. "What The Cat Dragged In" Episode #58

Sorry I haven't had any new material for a couple of days, folks! I promise, there's a new shot of Anya coming along in a few hours. In the meantime, I took a day off from the day job and the night job to pick up this '75 AMC Hornet over in central Washington. Why, you ask? Well, I'm not sure I have an adequate answer. But the truth is, I got it because all of the forward body parts interchange with my 4WD Eagle hatchback that's sitting behind it. The Eagle actually uses a modified Hornet/Gremlin body, and was "updated" for the 1980s with a squared-off grille and rectangular headlights. I prefer the round lights and contours of '70s styling, so I bought this Hornet for the hood, fenders, grille, bumpers, dashboard, gauges, wiring harness, curved side mirror, etc. I'll bolt 'em all together and paint the whole works black with some knobby white-letter tires and '70s wheels (or maybe just leave the black steelies on it). Considering I have virtually no extra time for this stuff, you'd think I'd find something more productive to do...

Making Good Progress, But...

Hey, I just wanted to take a minute to check in with everyone. The roof is going well, all the ruined wood has been replaced, along with new sheathing, vents, felt, and metal edging. The shingles themselves are about 1/4 finished so far, so it should be wrapped up in a few more evenings, and then I'll probably spend most of this weekend cleaning up the mess. Unfortunately, this project has gone a week and at least a thousand dollars over what I had budgeted, but it'll be worth it!

However, since one of the lines on my hot water heater decided to start leaking and flooded one room of the house last night, things are going to take just a little bit longer... If it's not one thing, it's another, eh?

Hey there, everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks for being so patient, as I continue to work on repairing my humble home instead of working on illustrations. Things are progressing well, almost all of the structural repairs are finished, and half of the sheathing is back on. Big thanks are in order for my long-time friends who have stopped by to help. I'm really hoping to have most of it wrapped up this weekend.

Be assured, once I get this out of the way, Daily Dames will return, and I'll be able to make more progress on my backlog of commissions. Stay tuned!

Apparently someone sneaky decided to take this shot of me today from the top of the ladder. That's right, it's a crazy cartoon pornographer with a prybar. Though the upper pieces don't look that bad in this shot, all of the sheathing is warped or rotted out completely (check out the lower edge), and I'll be patching up rotten ends on about a dozen of the trusses tomorrow. Yay.

I spent three hours on my roof this evening, tearing off old shingles to get ready for big repairs this weekend. This place is past due for a roof, so now it's getting done- though the carnage underneath from water damage is pretty bad. Not only is all of the sheathing completely shot, but I can already see that some of the structure underneath has rotted away, as well- I almost fell through it several times.

So, I ran out of time for tonight's girl, but check in tomorrow for Millie's turn to wear the pony gear!

It was actually a little startling when I made a list recently and found that I've now owned fifty-seven cars, since acquiring this '83 AMC Eagle SX/4 last week. Here it is in all its beige-and-brown glory, with one bright red spray-painted wheel- as delivered. I know it's too small and too new to fit in with most of the stuff I buy, but I've been looking for one of these for a while to build into a "work car." With the 4WD, inline six engine, and 5-speed manual transmission, it might actually be kinda fun to drive when I get it all together- and change the color.

I just wanted to take a minute to apologize for the shortage of Daily Dames lately. They haven't been very daily, have they? But, I've been making great progress on my backlog of commissions lately, which is only fair to those people who have been so patient and courteous with the long wait.

Speaking of commissions, I have to close my door to new commissions until further notice, though the Daily Dames will continue and I'm always interested in hearing your ideas for them. Really, I feel that this is the best thing to do until I can get caught up, especially with things getting busier all the time. It seems like the most fair thing to do, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who might have been interested in a private commission but hadn't spoken yet.
